FAQ

Autism spectrum disorder, commonly known as autism, is a complex neurodevelopmental condition involving a broad range of symptoms and individual characteristics.

Designed by specialists in neurodevelopmental disorders at the IMPAROLA centre, this course offers an in-depth understanding of autism, from diagnosis to treatment guidelines. Learners will develop the ability to recognise core symptoms, understand severity and support needs, identify individual characteristics and follow the diagnostic process. By the end of the course, they will be able to contribute to a more informed and aware understanding and support of autistic people.

The course provides essential information about autism spectrum disorder, from the elements that lead to diagnosis to the approaches used for treatment and rehabilitation.

The term “Autisms” is used to emphasise that the autism spectrum includes people with different and distinctive symptoms, abilities and needs. Starting from scientific evidence and the DSM-5 diagnostic manual, the course outlines the principal aspects shared by people within this clinical condition.

By the end of the course, learners will:

  • distinguish core symptoms and diagnostic specifiers of autism spectrum disorder;
  • understand the three severity/support levels described by DSM-5;
  • recognise characteristics associated with autism;
  • know the steps leading to diagnosis;
  • understand treatment recommendations in the guidelines.

Module 1 – Introduction to autism spectrum disorder. The concept of “Autisms” is introduced.

The course starts with neurodevelopmental disorders and then examines the main aspects of autism according to DSM-5. It analyses the two core symptoms, the three levels of severity and support, and possible causes of autism.

Module 2 – Comorbidity and differential diagnosis.

Clinical conditions that may occur alongside autism are examined, with emphasis on distinguishing diagnoses that share features with autism but are not autism itself, including social (pragmatic) communication disorder.

Module 3 – Characteristics of autism spectrum disorder.

The course reviews areas in which autistic people may show specific characteristics, including sensory, emotional, executive, communication and behavioural characteristics.

Module 4 – Possible developmental indicators.

This module describes early signs that may be observed at home and school and the stages of diagnostic assessment, highlighting the importance of an individualised intervention plan.

Module 5 – Guideline recommendations.

Recommended treatments for children and adolescents with ASD are explained, together with the different approaches on which treatments may be based.
